Democracy wins by defeating a treaty that would have rendered the European Union even more democratic. I think that's Sod's Law (or Murphy's?).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you're telling me that this constitutional amendment will overturn this Supreme Court ruling. I'm sure there must be any number of passages in there that back up such a bold statement, so feel free to quote some of them. I'll be here all day.

Colm, that is a true enough quote, what it doesn't say is that the only reason Ireland gets to have a referendum this time is because we are being asked to change our Constitution. Once the Constitution is changed in this way there is no legal obligation to offer the Irish people a referendum on any other changes in EU laws, treaties or amendments.

Stephen, I'm taking the piss. I'm all about the Yes vote. I fear I may have fallen afoul of Poe's Law.

Johnny, cheers. Although you've been around drunk Colm enough to know what I'm on about.

Caoimhin, Article 48 Subsection 4:

A conference of representatives of the governments of the Member States shall be
convened by the President of the Council for the purpose of determining by common accord
the amendments to be made to the Treaties.
The amendments shall enter into force after being ratified by all the Member States
in accordance with their respective constitutional requirements.

Rosie, mildly confused but I take it you're voting no.

Stephen: Article 48 lays open the door for future decisions to be made without any further referendums or interference from the voters. While there is nothing blatantly offensive within the new treaty there are loopholes which can be manipulated to ignore the citizens. Similarly Articles 16 and 188 combined create a framework by which healthcare, education, and social services can be auctioned off to private corporations, if these options are used it opens up possibilities for abuse by profit seeking institutions. Once enacted the Treaty and it's positions will be impossible to retract.
